About Amritsar:

Amritsar is home to the Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal in Agra as it has more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and is the number one destination for non-resident-Indians (NRI) in the whole of India.

Amritsar is currently witnessing rapid urban growth. Government of India and Government of Punjab have unveiled a Rs. 3,150 Crore plan to modernize Amritsar.. Money from the plan would fund construction of roads, water and sewage management, and a mass Rapid transit system. Recently, the government of India and Punjab pledged Rs. 2,100 Crore for the development of a Mass Rapid Transport system for the city. It is hoped that this will help in relieving traffic congestion and improving air quality.

Amritsar has witnessed a spurt in high-end residential property and multiplex development, courtesy the government’s decision to set up a special economic zone there.

Indian Railways has proposed a high speed rail line to serve Delhi-Amritsar via Chandigarh and Ambala. The train is to run at high speeds of 350 km/h, a first of its kind in India after the Bhopal Shatabdi. It will travel the distance of 445 km between the two cities in 2.5 hours (compared to the current time of nearly 8 hours)..

In 2006, the government of Punjab finalized plans for the construction of an elevated road with four lanes connected to the National highway for better access to the Golden Temple. This project is nearing completion.

Flight from Singapore to Amritsar Singapore Airlines is operating three weekly flights directly from Amritsar ,The airlines would also offer easy connectivity to Australia and Vancouver in Canada. At present, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan Airlines along with Indian Airlines are operating weekly 28 flights connecting various destinations in CIS countries, Europe, the USA and Canada, carrying over 3.5 lakh passengers annually.

In India, an increasingly popular tourist destination, hotel room rates are up 48 percent this year nationwide and a whopping 69 percent in its commercial capital of Mumbai, according to a recent Smith Travel report. India has only about 100,000 hotel rooms nationwide, roughly the same number as in New York City, though India has seven or eight times the number of tourists. As a result, hotel rates in India will continue to grow. An increase of "up to 35 and even 40 percent in the coming year," would not be unrealistic.
